We read recently that when administering modified-live vaccines to beef cattle that alcohol should not be used to swab and disinfect the needle. The article did not mention what should be used as a disinfectant. What should be used?

We have a 8 week old calf who was born breach and has always breathed heavily. He has been weaned off milk replacer and he won't eat much grain or drink much water (drank milk very well). He is bloated to the point of needing tubing every day (sometimes 2x per day). I am giving him microbial agents to develop his rumen and keep him stocked with starter and water. Any thoughts on what else we can do? I hate to keep tubing him.

We have 40 head of angus/charolais cross yearling heifers. All healthy up-to-date on shots. One smaller charolais cross has what appears as numerous small (3/8") wart appearing bumps between shoulders and head. Two have become fly infected. What are they and what's the remedy?

We have a three month old calf that has had scours for five weeks now. He was treated for coccidia, but the last test results showed him parasite free. We tried several antibiotics, treated for worms, changed pens, changed milk replacers to medicated, and feed gelling agents with electolites everyday for the last three weeks. The calf is getting skinnier and skinnier.I feel we are loosing the battle and the vet is out of ideas. Please help! The calf eats hay well but not alot of calf starter.

We had a 1 day old holstein calf examined by a vet. He suspected pneumonia, maybe viral. She was given something that would last for a week for a virus and for a bacterial pneumonia. Her fever kept spiking very high (108.2Highest) She got worse during the next few days then very slowly started to come around. But she seem to be having a harder time breathing. The vet gave her more antibiotics and also gave her antihistamine and steroids to dry out her lungs (she had a very snotty nose) and to reduce the swelling. Within three minutes of the antihistamines and steroids shots she started kicking then the breathing got shallow and then it stopped within a minute. We lost her,he didn't know why this happened. When we picked her up, alot of blood came out of her mouth. Can you offer any explanation to what happened and is it common practice to use steroids and antihistamine. He never did know for sure what she had. Thank you

Getting ready to wean. Is it better to vaccinate with a KV and leave the calves on the cows and then pull them off in 2 to 3 weeks and revaccinate with MLV or pull them off and vaccinate with a MLV and then revaccinate.
