Q: My wife and I had multiple chigger bites after walking in tall grass. Our French Bulldogs also had multiple red papules about 3-4 mm in size, but they didn't seem to itch. Do dogs get chiggers?

A: Yes, companion animals can also get chiggers. When an infection occurs, they usually exhibit the same itchy, reddened spots that humans do. Chiggers are a type of mite whose larvae feed on animals as part of their development into adults. Humans and other animals are exposed from infested environmental locations, commonly areas of thick shaded vegetation. Chiggers are not known to carry any other infectious diseases, and cannot be passed from one animal to another or to humans. Infections with chigger larvae only last a couple of days, and will clear up on their own. Some veterinarians may choose to treat with a topical anti-parasitic drug or antihistamine to control itching. However, prevention of infection through limiting environmental exposure is the best means of control. Re-infection can occur if pets continue to visit chigger infested areas.
