Q: I am writing a college paper about the benefits of obtaining a degree in biomedicine in order to become a vet. I was wondering what your opinion is on biomedicine in the veterinary career.
A: I think studies in biomedicine are a great way to approach a career in veterinary medicine -but certainly not the only way. The biomedical sciences are research fields contributing much of our new new knowledge about human and animal health. Veterinarians have unique abilities to contribute to biomedicine because of our comparative medical training -understanding of the anatomy, physiology, medicine, and husbandry of multiple species.
I encourage pre-veterinary students to learn as much as possible about the wide-range of disciplines that encompass and contribute to veterinary medicine. Focus on the topics that most interest you -like biomedicine. But don't hesitate to learn about some of the other things -like animal nutrition and management.
