Q:   I am new to the cattle business. What do the following terms mean: Solid mouth, broken mouth, long mouth? Is there a good reference for how the teeth of cattle look as they age? Thanks in advance for your help.

A:   The terms solid mouth and broken mouth refer in general to the age of a cow. A solid mouth cow has all of her teeth and is a better prospect than a broken mouth cow that is older and losing her teeth. I am not familiar with the term long mouth. USDA Food Safety Inspection Service has is a nice reference for judging the age of cattle by their teeth:
