Q:   I have a heifer with a kind of snotty nose and sounds a little stuffy. Can cattle have allergies? It is the middle of summer and all of the others seem to be fine

A:   Yes, cattle can have summer allergies. Sometimes upper respiratory inflammation occurs because of irritants like dust, flies, pollen, and seed heads. Also, calves become more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections as they lose the protection they received from colostrum. It's a good idea to have a veterinarian examine the calf to determine if any treatments are necessary.
