FASS Shares AVMA's Concerns Regarding Pew Report on Industrial Farm Animal Production
The Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) has analyzed the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production's report Putting Meat on the Table: Industrial Farm Animal Production in America as well as the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) response to the report. After a review by FASS' Scientific Advisory Committees, FASS agrees with AVMA that there are significant flaws in the Pew report.

Rabies
Rabies is one of the most widely known zoonotic diseases (those which can be transmitted from animals to humans) due to its considerable health implications. Rabies is always present in Nebraska, but with cyclical peaks generally occurring every 5 to 7 years. Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has had 51 reported cases of rabies in animals by mid-June (2009), making the current summer the highest since 2004 when 64 cases were reported for the year

Tuberculosis in Cattle
Tuberculosis of cattle (bovine TB) was once common in US cattle herds; damaging the health of cattle and, serving as an important source of human disease in the US. That was long ago. In 1917 the US began a program to protect public health by eliminating bovine TB from cattle and pasteurizing milk. This program has made bovine TB an extremely rare infection of cattle, and humans in the US today. Recently, bovine TB was diagnosed in cattle from a Nebraska ranch.
